Israel Folau to take Rugby Australia to federal court

Rugby

Former Wallabies star Israel Folau has launched legal proceedings with the Fair Work Commission against former employer Rugby Australia after he had his contract torn up by the sporting body.

Folau will sue the sporting administration for breach of contract with his lawyer stating under Section 772 of the Fair Work Act it was unlawful to terminate employment on the basis of religion.

In a statement, Folau said: “No Australian of any faith should be fired for practising their religion.”

Folau had his contract torn up after a three-person independent panel found the rugby star guilty of a high-level breach of the player’s code of conduct after he posted an image on Instagram which declared that “hell awaits” homosexuals.
