Manchester United fall to Valencia, miss chance to win Champions League group

Carlos Soler’s strike and Phil Jones’ own goal gave Valencia a 2-1 win over Manchester United in Champions League Group H action on Wednesday night.

Despite the loss, the Premier League side will advance to the round of 16 while third-placed Valencia settle for the Europa League. Serie A champions Juventus, who lost to Swiss side Young Boys, win the group.

The hosts grabbed the lead in the 17th minute when United goalkeeper Sergio Romero batted away Santi Mina’s cross to the feet of Soler, who slotted it in for the score.

Jones’ gaffe came two minutes after half-time. After he managed to bump Michy Batshuayi off the ball, Jones softly knocked the ball into the net as an out-of-position Sergio Romero haplessly looked on.

United took one back in the 87th minute when Marcus Rashford headed in Jesse Lingard’s cross.
