ATLANTA — New Orleans Saints quarterback Taysom Hill left Sunday’s 30-20 win over the Atlanta Falcons in the second quarter with a left foot injury and did not return.
Saints coach Sean Payton told Fox that Hill suffered a Lisfranc injury and would return if cleared. He was officially announced as questionable to return but never came back into the game.
Hill was injured during a 1-yard run with six minutes remaining in the first half. He walked to the locker room holding his left shoe after being evaluated by trainers on the field and in the sideline injury tent.
The Saints’ playoff hopes didn’t take much of a hit without Hill, however. Replacement Trevor Siemian threw two touchdown passes during New Orleans’ dominant 17-0 run over the final six minutes of the first half. The Saints’ defense kept giving Siemian the ball right back, including an interception by cornerback Paulson Adebo and a forced fumble by safety Malcolm Jenkins.
The Saints (8-8) can make the playoffs as the NFC’s No. 7 seed if they win and the Los Angeles Rams beat the San Francisco 49ers.
It would be a remarkable achievement for a Saints team that has used four different starting quarterbacks this season because of injuries and COVID-19 issues. The Saints had used 58 different starters on offense and defense this season coming into Sunday’s game — an NFL record, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.
Hill has gone 3-1 as New Orleans’ starting QB this season, getting a big assist from the defense. However, he has missed time with a concussion, a partially torn plantar fascia in his right foot and a mallet finger on the tip of his right middle throwing finger.
Hill had an entire season wiped out by a Lisfranc injury in his right foot during an injury-plagued college career at BYU.
Siemian went 0-4 as New Orleans’ starting QB when injuries were at their worst throughout the roster in the middle of the season. However, he did help lead New Orleans to a home win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 8 after original starter Jameis Winston suffered a torn ACL in the second quarter.
