Wentz set for more tests on hand; X-rays negative

NFL

PHILADELPHIA — Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz will have further testing done on his right throwing hand Monday after injuring it in the third quarter of Sunday’s 17-9 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

X-rays taken during the game came back negative, according to coach Doug Pederson. Wentz’s right hand was heavily wrapped as he exited the stadium Sunday evening.

“I don’t think so,” Wentz said, when asked if there’s anything to be concerned about with the hand in light of the additional testing, “but obviously we’ll wait and see.”

The injury occurred as Wentz tackled Quinton Jefferson following a botched handoff exchange with running back Miles Sanders that led to a fumble. Wentz flexed the hand as he made his way off the field. He threw on the sideline and took snaps from center Jason Kelce to test it out, and experimented with wearing a glove on his throwing hand before deciding against it.

He went indoors to have the hand examined following the next series and returned without missing a snap. Backup Josh McCown was warming up in the interim.

Working with a skeleton crew on offense, Wentz had one of his worst performances as a pro. He was charged with four turnovers — two interceptions and two lost fumbles — and finished 33-of-45 for 256 yards as the Eagles dropped to 5-6.

“I have to be better. I have to lead this football team better. I have to protect the football better. I can’t put it on the ground the way we did,” Wentz said. “It starts with me. It starts with me and I’m frustrated. I know everyone’s frustrated with this loss offensively.”
