Yanks’ Andujar has labrum tear; surgery possible

MLB

New York Yankees third baseman and AL Rookie of the Year runner-up Miguel Andujar has a small labrum tear in his right shoulder, manager Aaron Boone said Monday, with season-ending surgery a possibility.

Andujar was placed on the 10-day injured list earlier Monday due to a right shoulder strain he suffered on a headfirst slide Sunday.

According to Boone, there is optimism that Andujar won’t need surgery if the injury is treated conservatively.

“It’s a small labrum tear, so we’re gonna treat it conservatively for a couple weeks and see how he responds to it, and then at that point make a decision, which surgery could be in play, which would obviously compromise his season,” Boone said. “There is some optimism, though, that he would respond to the rehab protocol.”

The Yankees called up Tyler Wade from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take Andujar’s roster spot, and Boone said the bulk of his playing time will go to DJ LeMahieu.
