Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions sent a cease-and-desist letter to Floyd Mayweather Jr., according to the Los Angeles Times, following Mayweather’s offer of $200,000 to super featherweight Ryan Garcia if he can beat one of his fighters; the offer is seen as one of many instances of tampering by Golden Boy, the Times reported.
Garcia and Rolando Romero have been trading barbs for months. In a TMZ Sports video published Feb. 17, Mayweather challenged Garcia to step up, offering $200,000 if Garcia can defeat fellow undefeated fighter Romero.
“Ryan Garcia says he wants to fight ‘Tank,'” Mayweather said in the video. “… Well, I’m putting up the money right now.”
Mayweather added that if Garcia beats Romero that he would allow him to fight super featherweight champion Gervonta Davis, whom Mayweather promotes. Following Davis’ title defense earlier this month, Mayweather said he had a deal for Garcia.
According to the Times, Golden Boy Promotions filed the cease-and-desist based on the belief that Mayweather was tampering with Garcia.
The 20-year-old Garcia (17-0, 14 KOs) is scheduled to fight Jose Lopez (20-3-1) on March 30 at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California. Romero (7-0), 23, is scheduled to face a fighter to be determined on March 9 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
Garcia told TMZ that he would want $1 million if he were to knock out Romero.
