Boston Celtics guard Kyrie Irving, who suffered a scratched right eye in Monday’s loss to the San Antonio Spurs, is out for Wednesday night’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Irving suffered the injury as he and Spurs guard Marco Belinelli attempted to secure a rebound in the fourth quarter of the Celtics’ 120-11 loss. Belinelli swiped at the ball and hit Irving in the eye, causing the Celtics guard to stay down on the floor for a short time writhing in pain.
“(He) smacked the s— out of me,” Irving said. “He just caught me pretty good.”
Irving briefly left the game but he returned to the floor and managed to score two points down the stretch.
An eight-year veteran, Irving is averaging 23.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 6.6 assists. Irving has produced at least eight assists in three consecutive games.
Big men Aron Baynes (left fourth metacarpal fracture) and Robert Williams (left groin strain) are also out for the Celtics.
For the Wolves, forward Robert Covington (ankle) is out, and guards Derrick Rose (ankle) and Jeff Teague (ankle) are likely to sit Wednesday night.
