England’s Underhill doubtful for Six Nations

England flanker Sam Underhill is a doubt for the Six Nations after Bath confirmed he had suffered ankle ligament damage.

Underhill, 22, was hurt in Bath’s 23-16 win over Leicester Tigers in the Gallagher Premiership on Sunday and will now see a specialist to assess the extent of the injury.

In a statement on their club website Bath said they would release further details of Underhill’s expected return date after he is reviewed.

England begin their Six Nations campaign away to the holders and last year’s Grand Slam winners Ireland on Feb. 2.

Underhill has picked up nine caps for his country and would have been a contender to start after a successful November international series lat year, including caps against New Zealand and Australia.

But he would be unlikely to recover in time if he has suffered anything above Grade 1 ligament damage, the lowest level of severity.

Bath also confirmed second row Matt Garvey would undergo surgery and be out for at least three months with a fractured ankle.
