Manchester United’s Jose Mourinho had ‘nothing to do’ with Jorge Mendes statement

Craig Burley and Adrian Healy breakdown Manchester United’s thrashing of Fulham and Jose Mourinho’s cryptic comments after the match.

Jose Mourinho says he did not know about agent Jorge Mendes’ vote of confidence before it was released.

Mendes made a rare public statement on Friday when he insisted Manchester United were fully behind Mourinho despite a disappointing start to the season.

“I have nothing to do with the statement, it is Jorge’s statement, not my statement,” Mourinho told a news conference ahead of the Champions League clash with Valencia.

“I didn’t know [it was coming] and I don’t care about it.”

Mourinho has already confirmed Paul Pogba, left in the bench against Arsenal and Fulham, will start against the Spanish side while 17-year-old midfielder James Garner is set to be on the bench.

Mourinho will rotate his squad with United already through to the last 16.

“I am looking for him [Pogba] to play well, and for him to have a good impact on the game and the team,” said Mourinho.

“I hope that people like Paul and a couple of others that are normally in the team, I hope they can have a good impact on the team.”

United can still finish top of Group H if they win in Spain and Juventus fail to beat Switzerland.

Mourinho is still expected to name a makeshift team but the 55-year-old insists it is not because he has one eye on the Premier League clash with Liverpool on Sunday.

“It’s not about Liverpool, it’s about the match [against Valencia],” he said. “Football is football, anything can happen.

“Normally Juventus should win in Switzerland, so I don’t think the result of the match will have an impact.”
