India captain Virat Kohli won the toss and chose to put Australia in at the Gabba in Brisbane. On a humid evening in Brisbane, Kohli chose to give his bowlers first chance to make an impression, with his batsmen still adjusting to higher-bouncing Australian surfaces. The T20I series opener is the first match of a summer in which the two sides will meet 10 times across three formats.

Australia chose to drop Nathan Coulter-Nile, replacing him with wristspinner Adam Zampa. Of the 12 India had named on the eve of the match, Yuzvendra Chahal was left out, with Kuldeep Yadav the sole wristspinner in the XI and Khaleel Ahmed the third seamer.
