Talks between Inter Milan and Milan Skriniar over a contract extension are progressing with both sides confident an agreement will soon be reached, sources close to the Serie A club and player have told ESPN FC.

Skriniar, 23, is contracted to the Nerazzurri until 2022, but negotiations are underway over an extension to that agreement.

The Slovakian defender has been a mainstay of the Inter defence since joining from Sampdoria in the summer of 2017.

He did not miss a minute of their 38 Serie A games last season, in which he scored four goals, and has played nine of their 11 league fixtures so far this season.

Skriniar has also impressed in the Italian club’s first Champions League campaign in seven years, attracting attention from clubs throughout Europe, including Manchester United and Barcelona, whose attack he helped tame on Tuesday night in a 1-1 draw at San Siro.

That led Inter coach Luciano Spalletti to claim Skriniar was worth more than €100 million.

“If it’s Barcelona, they will have to pay €100m and if I am them I would pay a €20m tip on top,” Spalletti said.

“And if I’m Real Madrid, the [€100m] with a €40m tip — that is how highly I rate Skriniar.”

Skriniar has admitted he was flattered by links to United in the past.

“When some coach like Jose says that he is looking for a player like me or somebody else, it’s always nice, but I don’t know why these rumours continue,” he told ESPN FC
