British road cyclist Lizzie Deignan has announced she will retire in 2025.
Deignan has agreed a one-year contract extension with Lidl-Trek, and will subsequently retire from professional cycling at the end of the 2025 season.
The 35-year-old won an Olympic silver medal in 2012 and is one of Britain’s most decorated road cyclists alongside being a leader in reshaping the landscape of women’s cycling.
“I’m really proud of the career I’ve had. Do I feel that I can achieve anything that I haven’t already achieved? Probably not,” she told BBC Sport.
“If I’m really honest with myself, I think the fire and the determination that it takes to be the best in the world is probably running short.”
Along with several sporting accolades and an MBE title, Deignan started a family mid-career in 2018 — a choice which at the time was a rarity in the women’s professional peloton.
She returned to racing at her best, topping the UCI Women’s WorldTour rankings within just 18 months of her comeback.
