Ghana to remain as 2018 AWCN hosts

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed on Friday that the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCN) will be hosted in Ghana.

CAF contemplated stripping Ghana of the hosting rights earlier this year, after the government temporarily took charge of football matters following the resignation of FA President Kwesi Nyantakyi.

Nyantakyi stepped down following an investigation by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, who secretly filmed him discussing plans to set aside 25 per cent of a proposed sponsorship deal to a company he owns in a documentary called ‘When Greed and Corruption Become the Norm’.

“We are satisfied with what is happening in Ghana and the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations will take place there,” CAF President Ahmad Ahmad told the media in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, on Friday evening.

Earlier this month, the Kenya FA had withdrawn interest from hosting the Women’s competition because they only had one Stadium that was ready.

“Kenya have withdrawn interest in hosting 2018 AWCON,” the Kenya FA President Nick Mwendwa told KweséESPN at the time.

“We had expressed our interest in hosting the competition after learning that Ghana will not be able to host.

“Unfortunately, we seem to have only the Kasarani Stadium ready to host the competition, and yet two stadiums are required.”

The eight-team tournament takes place from November 17 to December 1.

Hosts Ghana, Nigeria, Algeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Mali, South Africa and Zambia are the teams that will feature in the women’s continental showpiece.
