Great Britain’s Kyle Evans and team-mate Kye Whyte claimed an unlikely gold and silver in the BMX to make it a British one-two at the European Championships.
Evans, 24, won the final convincingly in 34.715 seconds to ensure his first international title, although the performance of Whyte, 18, also caught the eye as he pushed world champion Sylvain Andre into bronze.
The two medals won in Glasgow to the delight of the home crowd take the British cycling tally to 12 at this European Championships.
Wigan-born Evans admitted he was surprised by the victory after finishing sixth behind Andre at the world championships in Baku in June, but had been pushed on by Whyte who crossed the line in 35.272 seconds.
“I know what Kye can do on the track and he’s the last person you want behind you,” Evans said.
“So the whole time, I was thinking ‘keep driving speed’ otherwise he’ll come up and snap it off me. He’s a good talent on the rise.”
Meanwhile Dutch world champion Laura Smulders retained her title after leading from the start in the women’s final.
She held off a late challenge by silver-medalist Simone Tetsche Christensen from Denmark to win in 38.700 seconds, while Russia’s Yaroslava Bondarenko took bronze.
