Matteo Berrettini denied Andy Murray his first ATP singles title in almost three years edged to a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory in the Stuttgart Open final on Sunday.

Murray was playing in his second singles final of the year, having previously lost to Aslan Karatsev at the Sydney Open in January.

On Sunday, Berrettini struck an early blow in the grass-court event final as he broke Murray in the third game of the match, and the Italian saved four break points in the following game as he claimed the first set 6-4. Murray then outlasted Berrettini in a lengthy second set.

World No. 10 Berrettini broke Murray in the opening game of the final set decider and never looked back, eventually breaking his opponent again later in the set to win the match, his sixth career singles title.
