Australia have won the toss at Trent Bridge in an ODI they must win to keep the series alive.
Defeat in any of the remaining games in the series will mean Australia have lost five ODI series in succession. They have slipped to sixth position in the ICC ODI team rankings – their worst placing since January 1984 – with two wins from their last 15 ODIs. They have also lost seven of their last eight ODIs against England.
If England win, it will be the first time they have won back-to-back ODI series against Australia since 1986-87.
Eoin Morgan, who missed the second ODI in Cardiff due to a back spasm, returns for England in place of Sam Billings, while Billy Stanlake has recovered from a toe injury and replaces Kane Richardson in the Australia side.
In the most recent completed ODI on the ground – there was a rain-ruined encounter in 2017 – England scored a record 444 for 3 against Pakistan in 2016. It remains the highest score ever made in an ODI.
Morgan, the England captain, admitted he would have chosen to bowl first, too, had he won the toss. “We enjoy chasing and it looks like a fantastic wicket,” Morgan told Sky Sports.
