Sources: Ramos agrees Mexico move, rejects José

Sergio Ramos is due to undergo a medical in Madrid on Monday before completing a move to Mexico’s Monterrey, sources have told ESPN.

The former Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Sevilla defender, 38, signed a pre-contract agreement on Sunday, sources said, after Monterrey executives travelled to Spain to finalise the details on a one-year contract until December 2025.

Ramos has been a free agent since leaving Sevilla at the end of last season.

Sources said the former World Cup and European Championship winner is due to travel to Mexico later this week.

Ramos had been close to joining Fenerbahce — and his former boss José Mourinho — in recent weeks, a source told ESPN.

Mourinho coached Ramos at Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, although their relationship at that time was turbulent.

The Turkish giants were the team that showed most interest in Ramos, among a number of interested parties, before he opted for Monterrey, the source said.

“I have little to add about Sergio,” Monterrey coach Martin Demichelis said, after their 1-0 win over Necaxa this weekend.

“[On Sunday] club officials will be traveling to Madrid to do the necessary things so that Sergio can come. The medical check-up and his work visa will be done there in Madrid, so that he can arrive as soon as possible.

“Next week we’ll have the presentation of all the players who have arrived, with Sergio included. That would be great.”

Ramos spent 16 years at Real Madrid — after coming through Sevilla’s academy — captaining the club and winning four Champions Leagues and five LaLiga trophies.

He left Madrid on a free transfer in 2021 and spent two seasons with PSG, before returning to Sevilla for the 2023-24 season.

Since leaving Sevilla in June, he had posted frequent updates on social media showing him continuing to maintain his fitness as he looked for a new club.
