FA reject Bentancur appeal over seven-game ban

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has seen his appeal dismissed by the Football Association (FA) regarding his seven-game ban for comments he made about teammate Son Heung-Min in a television interview earlier this year.

Bentancur was banned and handed a £100,000 ($126,710) fine after comments he made in a Uruguayan Television programme during which the host asked for a Spurs player’s shirt, to which he replied, “Sonny’s?,” adding: “It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same.”

The FA said when he was banned that he had used abusive language and brought the game into disrepute. On Tuesday, it said its independent appeal board had decided to uphold the ban.

“This appeal was dismissed following a hearing, and the seven-match suspension remains as ordered by the Regulatory Commission,” the FA said in a statement.

“The Appeal Board’s written reasons for its decision will be published in due course.”
