Liverpool draw further damages PL title hopes

Football

Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw away to West Ham United on Saturday, sustaining a further blow to their hopes of lifting the Premier League title in manager Jurgen Klopp’s final season at the club.

West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen netted the opener just before half-time but Liverpool levelled the scores minutes into the second half through Andy Robertson.

Liverpool went ahead when opposing Alphonse Areola goalkeeper scored an unfortunate own goal after a Cody Gakpo volley deflected first off Angelo Ogbonna and then Areola. But West Ham’s Michail Antonio netted a header shorly after, meaning Liverpool failed to put pressure on title rivals Arsenal and Manchester City.

Liverpool remain third on 75 points, one behind second-placed City, who have played two games fewer, and two behind first-placed Arsenal, who have a game in hand and a much-superior goal difference.  Meanwhile, West Ham remain eighth on 49 points.
