Hornets’ new jerseys inspired by team’s past

NBA

The Charlotte Hornets unveiled Association and Icon jerseys on Monday for the 2020-21 season — and they dipped into their history for their new look.

This is the first full redesign for the Hornets since the team rebranded from the Charlotte Bobcats in 2014.

The new look features double pinstripes on the jerseys, similar to what the franchise used from 1997 to 2002. This time around, the pinstripes are just one color — teal on the white Association jersey and white on the teal Icon jerseys. Purple is used to trim the numbers on both jerseys and the names, “Charlotte” on the Association and “Hornets” on the Icon.

Like the design the new uniforms derive from, the Hornets will have mostly plain shorts. The shorts have a double stripe going down the side that opens into a cell Hornets logo near the bottom.

Both jerseys feature the Jordan Brand’s Jumpman logo on the chest instead of the normal Nike swoosh. Michael Jordan is the majority owner of the Hornets franchise and the team is the only one in the league to use the Jumpman logo on its Association and Icon jerseys

Starting next season, all Statement edition jerseys will feature the Jumpman logo. Charlotte will wear the same Statement edition jersey it had for the 2019-20 season — a purple jersey with “CHA” on the front — and will unveil new City edition uniforms at a later date.

Along with the new jerseys, the Hornets also unveiled a new primary court design as well. The center court logo has changed to one of the team’s partial primary logos instead of the regular logo. The Buzz City alternates inside each three-point line have changed to purple Hornet silhouette logos.

The biggest change however is that the stained cell pattern that was previously full court now stops at the three-point line. There’s a new cell pattern inside the pant and on the baselines, similar to the pattern found on the new shorts.

Additionally, the baselines now have Charlotte on one side and Hornets on the other rather than both saying Charlotte Hornets.
