Redskins’ Steven Sims returns kickoff 91 yards for touchdown

LANDOVER, Md. — The Washington Redskins have wanted to get rookie Steven Sims more involved. On his second kickoff return Sunday, he showed why that’s the case.

Sims returned a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter vs. Detroit on Sunday, marking the Redskins’ first kick return for a touchdown since Nov. 22, 2015. The play highlighted what Sims offers. He initially muffed the ball, picked it up at the 9-yard line and stepped out of a tackle attempt at his feet 2 yards later. He then darted through traffic and down the left sideline. He was so far ahead of the nearest defender that he could high step it in for the last 20 yards.

According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Sims hit a top speed of 20.0 miles per hour.

Sims, an undrafted rookie receiver out of Kansas, has worked as a backup in the slot. He scored on a 65-yard run earlier this season.

He also returned Sunday’s opening kickoff for 33 yards, bouncing it wide after initially finding a clogged middle.
