Can anyone stop Aguero claiming Premier League Golden Boot?

ESPN FC’s Steve Nicol presents his Saturday Premier League week four takeaways including best goal, biggest letdown and controversy.
Steve Nicol delves into just how much Man City will rue the loss of Aymeric Laporte who was stretchered off vs. Brighton.

We got a 6/1 treble up over the weekend while also correctly calling Cristiano Ronaldo to score for Juventus against Napoli. Euro 2020 qualifiers take centre stage later in the week so now is an ideal time to take a breath and have a look at the revised betting for the Premier League title and top goal scorer.

Running total: +£31.50

The Banker

Despite the fact that Liverpool are the only team in the Premier League to still have a 100% record, Manchester City’s title odds have been cut to 2/5 with bet365. Sergio Aguero scored twice as the Citizens beat Brighton 4-0 at the Etihad while Liverpool, who eased to a 3-0 win at Burnley, are 5/2 to go one better than last season.

Tottenham, who have picked up just five points from their opening four fixtures, have been pushed out to 40/1 in the title betting while Manchester United are now 100/1 after a stuttering start. The Red Devils have dropped points to Southampton, Crystal Palace and Wolves so far and are a 6/4 shot to finish in the top four.

Leicester City have been cut to 2/1 to finish in the top six and on the evidence we have seen so far that looks a solid bet. Eight points from four games is a solid return and they are one of just three top-flight clubs who have yet to taste defeat. Jamie Vardy and James Maddison have been taking the plaudits but Hamza Choudhury is a young midfielder with talent to burn and this Foxes squad, led by their tactical general Brendan Rodgers, look a cracking bet to break the stranglehold of the Big Six.

Selection: £6 on Leicester City to finish in the Top Six at 2/1 with bet365.

The Golden Boot Update

Four games in and the usual suspects head the Premier League’s Golden Boot betting with Aguero now a 7/2 favourite to finish the season as top scorer. The Argentine has six goals so far at an average of 45 minutes per goal. Teammate Raheem Sterling has been the big mover with his odds slashed from 14/1 to 5s after a blistering start. Sterling has five goals already and 5/1 still looks a juicy price when you consider the sheer number of goals City are racking up.

Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang all have three goals apiece and the bookies are obviously keen to keep them onside. Kane is a 9/2 shot for the Golden Boot while it’s 11/2 Salah and 9/1 Aubameyang.

If you are looking for a value each-way pick you could do worse than a small play on Tammy Abraham, who is still 25/1 despite scoring four times already. At the weekend Abraham became the first Englishman to score at least two goals in consecutive Premier League appearances for Chelsea since Frank Lampard in January 2010, and he’s only going to get better.

Selection: £2 on Abraham to be Premier League top scorer at 25/1 (each way) with bet365.

The Wildcard Tip

Before the season started we advised a punt on Manchester City to go unbeaten in the 2019-20 season at 50/1 and the same bet is already into 14s now with bet365. Liverpool meanwhile are 7/2 not to lose at home in the league this season. The Reds haven’t actually lost at Anfield since May 2017, and that is currently the longest unbeaten home record in European football by some distance. With newly crowned UEFA Men’s Player of the Year Virgil van Dijk pulling the strings defensively it’s going to take a good side to beat them on the evidence we’ve seen so far.

Selection: £2 on Liverpool to go unbeaten at home in the 2019/20 season at 7/2 with bet365.
