Seattle Mariners outfielder Keon Broxton has been fined and suspended two games by Major League Baseball for throwing equipment that struck umpire Manny Gonzalez during Monday’s game.
Broxton will appeal the penalty, which was announced Tuesday by Joe Torre, the chief baseball officer for Major League Baseball.
After striking out looking in the second inning of a 5-4 loss to the New York Yankees on Monday, Broxton threw his bat down, flipped his helmet off and threw one of his batting gloves behind him, which appeared to hit Gonzalez.
Broxton was immediately ejected for the first time in his career. He is eligible to play until his appeal is heard by MLB.
He was replaced in Monday’s game by Mallex Smith, who was using the bathroom when the ejection happened.
“I ran downstairs, I was buckling up my pants,” Smith said. “I actually had to wash my hands after the inning. That’s a real thing.”
