Sources: Wolves can talk to Clips GM Winger

NBA

The Minnesota Timberwolves have been granted permission to meet with LA Clippers general manager Michael Winger in the franchise’s search for a president of basketball operations, league sources told ESPN.

Minnesota owner Glen Taylor has targeted a handful of potential candidates to oversee the Timberwolves operations — with Winger among them, league sources told ESPN.

Since arriving in August 2017 after serving as an assistant GM with Oklahoma City, Winger, 39, has been credited with having a significant impact in the Clippers front office under Lawrence Frank, president of basketball operations.

The Clippers have reshaped their roster, replenished future draft assets, cleared max salary cap space and managed to stay competitive and return to the playoffs.

Winger spent seven years with the Thunder under GM Sam Presti, where the franchise was a perennial Western Conference contender. Winger started his career in the Cleveland Cavaliers front office under former GM Danny Ferry.
