Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes is set to be appointed manager of League Two side Oldham Athletic, sources have told ESPN.
Pete Wild had been installed as manager on an interim basis following the sacking on Frankie Bunn on Dec. 27, and masterminded a 2-1 victory away at Premier League Fulham in the FA Cup third round.
However, owner Abdallah Lemsagam moved to appoint a full time manager and will turn to Oldham-born Scholes on a full-time basis — his first game in charge will be Yeovil at home next Tuesday with Wild likely to be caretaker-manager for Saturday’s clash at Crawley.
Oldham are being made to wait before confirming the appointment due to Scholes’ involvement as part-owner of National League club Salford. However, following a meeting of the English Football League, the move is set to be given the go-ahead.
Scholes is the fourth of the six members of the famed Class of 92 crop of Manchester United academy players to try his hand at management.
Ryan Giggs, who is now Wales boss, was the first when he was appointed caretaker manager at United following the sacking of David Moyes in 2014, before Gary Neville’s first and only role came during a four-month stint at Valencia in 2015-16.
His brother Phil Neville is the England women’s team manager, having previously worked as a coach at Valencia. Nicky Butt is the head of United’s academy but has never had a full-time role while David Beckham is launching Major League Soccer franchise Inter Miami C.F.
The six ex-players are all part owners of Conference Premier side Salford City.
