Toss New Zealand chose to bat v India

On a “used” surface, Kane Williamson won the toss and decided to bat first and see if their batsmen and then their spinners could put India under pressure. Accordingly, they replaced seam-bowling allrounder Colin de Grandhomme with a specialist spinner Mitchell Santner. This pitch was the same as the one India spinners tied New Zealand in knots on.

India made two changes to their side, one of which was forced because of a sore hamstring for MS Dhoni. Dinesh Karthik replaced him. Hardik Pandya, with the provisional ban on him lifted pending legal procedures, was back and replaced Vijay Shankar.

New Zealand 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Colin Munro, 3 Kane Williamson (capt.), 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Tom Latham (wk), 6 Henry Nicholls, 7 Mitchell Santner, 8 Doug Bracewell, 9 Ish Sodhi, 10 Lockie Feguson, 11 Trent Boult

India 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli (capt.), 4 Ambati Rayudu, 5 Kedar Jadhav, 6 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 7 Hardik Pandya, 8 Kuldeep Yadav, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Yuzvendra Chahal
