Rodgers to play vs. Jets, cites role as a leader

NFL

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said Wednesday he will play on Sunday against the New York Jets.

“It’s about leadership. How can I stand here and say these games don’t matter? … That’s not the way I lead,” he told reporters, according to The Athletic. “I’m super competitive.”

Rodgers said after Sunday’s loss at Chicago — which helped eliminate the Packers from playoff contention with two games to play — that he injured his groin on the final play of the first half. Although he didn’t miss a snap, he spent most of the second half trying to stretch it out because, he said, “it bothered me a little bit.”

The injury combined with the Packers playing out the string had left some doubt about his status.

The oddsmakers apparently thought it was possible Rodgers would sit out. The Packers opened as a 3-point favorite Sunday. By Monday morning, the Jets (4-10) were a 1.5-point favorite. By Monday afternoon, the game was off the board.
