Leigh Halfpenny has been ruled out of Wales’ final autumn international against South Africa.
Full-back Halfpenny suffered concussion in a collison with Australia’s Samu Kerevi earlier this month and was absent from last weekend’s thumping 74-24 win over Tonga.
It had initially been hoped that the Scarlets man would return in time for Saturday’s finale in Cardiff, but on Tuesday Wales confirmed that he will also miss the clash with Rassie Erasmus’ side.
“Leigh is out. He did some training on Saturday morning and he was still feeling a little bit light-headed,” said assistant coach Rob Howley.
“It is a common sense approach. The player’s welfare came first so unfortunately he will miss out this weekend.”
Halfpenny’s absence could mean that Liam Williams shifts to full-back from the wing, while Jonah Holmes — a debutant against Tonga — is another candidate to fill the gap.
In better news for head coach Warren Gatland, however, British and Irish Lions wing George North has been cleared to play in Cardiff.
“I am glad to say George North is back in full training. He trained this morning and he is available for selection,” Howley added.
Wales have beaten Scotland, Australia and Tonga so far this month and will be looking to sign off their productive autumn series with one final victory against the Springboks.
