Quique Sanchez Flores will meet Mexican Football Federation (FMF) president Yon de Luisa in London this week about the vacant head coach’s position, according to sources consulted by ESPN’s Jordi Blanco.
Sanchez Flores, 53, has previously managed clubs including Benfica, Atletico Madrid and Watford, and has been out of work since leaving Espanyol in April.
He has already held initial talks with the FMF and is No. 1 choice for El Tri, according to Blanco, despite reports suggesting Gerardo “Tata” Martino had agreed verbal terms to become head coach.
Sanchez Flores has previously been linked with the Mexico job and has also been sounded out by three clubs in La Liga and two in the Premier League, sources said.
Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti will be in charge as interim coach when Mexico play Argentina on Nov. 16 and 20, with the FMF having stressed that the process of replacing former coach Juan Carlos Osorio would take time.
If Sanchez Flores gets the Mexico job, it would be his first in international football.
Former Argentina and Paraguay manager Martino said last month that he would not be staying with Atlanta United after his contract runs out after the playoffs, sparking reports that he was set to take over El Tri.
He has also been linked with a return to Argentina, while the Colombia and United States national team jobs are still open.
