Chargers’ Melvin Gordon, Joey Bosa not ruled out for Seahawks

COSTA MESA, Calif. — Returning from the team’s bye week, Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn would not rule out two frontline players for Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Lynn said it remains possible that defensive end Joey Bosa and running back Melvin Gordon could make it onto the field at Seattle.

Bosa has missed the first seven games of the year due to a bruised left foot he suffered Aug. 7 during the opening week of training camp.

He hasn’t practiced since re-aggravating the foot injury in the lead-up to the Bolts’ season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs in September and seems unlikely to play against the Seahawks.

“I don’t want to rule him out,” Lynn said about Bosa. “I think earlier in the year, I was comfortable with doing that. But now he’s getting closer, so I don’t want to rule him out right now. So we’ll just kind of wait and see where he’s at.”

Bosa finally got the news that he needed last week — the occasional pain and discomfort that he felt after workouts was not a warning sign, but a normal part of his recovery from a sprained foot that has kept him off the field so far this season.

Armed with that new information and buoyed by reports that the injury improved from his latest MRI, Bosa is full steam ahead on his rehab.

Bosa said he worked out for the first time in cleats Monday and feels optimistic he can practice with his teammates in the next few weeks, although no timetable has been established for his return.

“The second my foot is ready to practice on a Wednesday, I will play that week,” Bosa said. “Whether it’d be next week or two weeks from now, I’m feeling very confident with the way it’s progressing, that I’m going to be out there in the next few weeks ready to go. Whether that’d be next week, or two weeks, three weeks, four weeks — whatever — five weeks, I’m feeling confident that surgery is going to be avoided, which is the main goal.

“Once you have a screw in your foot it’s really not the same after. To be the best asset to my team and myself the rest of my career it’s really important to take this slowly and do it the right way.”

While the Chargers traveled to Cleveland to take on the Browns and then the following week to London where they faced the Tennessee Titans, Bosa stayed back in Southern California working at the team facility.

Bosa said the training was a slow process that began with walking and toe raises and eventually escalated to running in a straight line.

The breakthrough for Bosa was the realization that pain and discomfort in his injured foot wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, just something he would have to work through as he rehabbed the injury.

“Just got a clear and concise message, ‘Yeah, this is going to hurt. Yeah, you’re going to have to deal with pain — just keep pushing through,'” Bosa said. “Ever since we got that message it’s been actually a fun progression where I’ve actually been coming out and moving forward every single day.”

While Bosa appears to be a few weeks away from playing, the odds look better for Gordon returning to action on Sunday. The Wisconsin product was a late scratch a week ago due to a hamstring issue before the game in London — his first missed game of the season.

Lynn said Gordon will practice in some capacity Wednesday.

“The week off really helped Melvin,” Lynn said. “He ran well last week. He’s going to do some things this week, and we’ll see where he’s at. But hamstrings can be tricky, so you don’t want to rush those.”

Lynn said the players would go through a walk-through on Monday after taking off last week.
