Former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa, who did not play last season after being frozen out by former coach Unai Emery, has signed a one-year contract with Rennes.

Ben Arfa, 31, made his last appearance for PSG on April 5, 2017, in the quarterfinals of the Coupe de France, when he scored twice in a 4-0 win over Avranches.

“I learned a lot of things in Paris,” Ben Arfa said at a presentation on Sunday. “The last year has been very complicated, but one can learn from every experience. We fall, we get up, we fall, we get up. Today, thanks to all of it, I am confident.”

Out of contract since June, Ben Arfa’s lawyer said earlier this week that his client plans to file a legal claim against PSG for his treatment during last season.

In April, Ben Arfa posted a photo on Instagram in front of a cake, celebrating one year since he last made a competitive appearance for the club.

He joined PSG in 2016 after one season at Nice.
