Cleveland Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith spoke to police in New York City on Friday about allegations that he threw a fan’s cell phone into a construction site last month, officials say.
Smith was issued a desk ticket for misdemeanor criminal mischief and will appear in Manhattan Criminal Court later this year, according to an official.
“This is nonsense and we’re not going to respond to nonsense,” Smith’s attorney, Alex Spiro, wrote in a statement to ESPN.
On July 26, a man told police that Smith grabbed his cell phone and threw it into a construction zone in Manhattan after the man tried to take a picture of Smith.
