AKRON, Ohio — Tiger Woods returned to one of his favorite courses with another score in the 60s, shooting 4-under par 66 on Thursday at Firestone Country Club in the opening round of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

Woods, who qualified for the World Golf Championship event by moving into the top 50 in the world two weeks ago, made his only bogey on the ninth hole, his last.

He has won eight times at Firestone, including the last of his 79 PGA Tour wins in 2013.

Kyle Stanley was leading with a 63.

It is the first time since the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March that Woods has been closer than a tie for 29th after the first round.
