Boxing fans may have to wait a little longer before they see IBF super flyweight world champion Jerwin Ancajas back in the ring.
Team Ancajas matchmaker Sean Gibbons exclusively told ESPN5 on Thursday that their camp is leaning towards moving the Filipino boxers’ sixth title defense from September 14 to September 29.
According to Gibbons, Ancajas’ wife is scheduled to give birth around the second or third week of September and they’re giving him the chance to be there when their daughter is born.
“Jerwin’s wife is actually having a baby girl I believe right around that time. We had a chance for the 29th instead of the 14th, so it seems like it’s going to work better. We don’t want the baby to be born while Jerwin is in the U.S. It would be nice to have him here,” Gibbons said.
For coach Joven Jimenez, the September 29 schedule becomes ideal to give them more time to prepare. It will also allow Ancajas to be more focused in his training without having to worry about his family.
Pechanga, California is being eyed as the new venue for the match after initial reports indicated Ancajas would fight again in Fresno. Meanwhile, Mexican Alejandro Santiago Barrios could possibly be the IBF champ’s next opponent.
