Tuca Ferretti denies Mexico interest as Tigres retain Campeon de Campeones trophy

Sebastian Salazar and Herculez Gomez assess Mexico’s World Cup after a last 16 exit and discuss why Liga MX could be a hindrance on El Tri’s future.

Tigres defeated Santos Laguna 4-0 in Los Angeles on Sunday to win its third straight Campeon de Campeones trophy and head coach Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti vowed afterwards to continue at the club, even if the Mexico job comes up.

El Tri manager Juan Carlos Osorio’s future is still unknown and Ferretti’s name has already been mentioned as a possible replacement due to his experience and success in the Mexican game.

But Ferretti would be unlikely to accept the job.

“They’ve asked me that question 50,000 times since Friday,” said Ferretti, who has won four Liga MX titles since taking over at Tigres in 2010, in a news conference after the win. “I honestly can’t imagine it … I only just started a [new] three-year contract on July 1 and I plan to fulfill it.”

The annual Campeon de Campeones pits the winners of the previous Apertura tournament (Tigres) with the winners of the Clausura (Santos Laguna) in a battle between Mexico’s two champions over the traditional season.

Tigres strolled to victory on Sunday, with returning Argentine midfielder Guido Pizarro heading in from a corner to open the scoring in the 42nd minute and Javier Aquino finishing a Jurgen Damm cross just before halftime.

Damm assisted Lucas Zelarayan in the 67th for Tigres’ third, with French striker Andre-Pierre Gignac adding the fourth.

Santos Laguna has had a difficult offseason since winning the Clausura title in May, with Los Guerreros selling key players Nestor Araujo, Carlos Izquierdoz and Djaniny Tavares.

In the earlier Supercopa MX, Necaxa overcame Monterrey 1-0 in something of a surprise result between last season’s cup winners.

Francisco Cordova netted the only goal in the first half in 31-year-old Marcelo Michel Leano’s first game in charge of Necaxa.

The Liga MX 2018 Apertura gets underway on Friday.
