De La Hoya stays undefeated, TKOs Salgado

Diego De La Hoya remained undefeated with a seventh-round TKO of Jose Salgado in a junior featherweight match scheduled for 10 rounds. The bout was the main event of a Golden Boy on ESPN card at the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York.

Salgado (35-5-2, 28 KOs) and De La Hoya (21-0, 10 KOs) were originally scheduled to fight on December 14, 2017, but when De La Hoya failed to make the contracted weight, the fight was canceled.

The 28-year-old Salgado, from Cozumel, Mexico, did a lot of trash talking leading up to Friday’s fight, but couldn’t live up to his boast inside the ring.

Mexicali’s De La Hoya, 22, dished out a one-sided beating, and Salgado’s corner told the referee their man had had enough at the end of the seventh round.

In the co-feature, Travell “Black Magic” Mazion (13-0, 11 KOs) won a unanimous 8-round decision over Daquan Paulo (17-2, 9 KOs) in a junior middleweight bout. The scores in Mazion’s favor were 78-74, 77-75 and 77-75.

Paulo, from Orlando, Florida, got off to a decent start, stalking his backpedaling rival the first four rounds and landing several jolting counter rights to the head.

Mazion, a 22-year old from Austin, Texas, became more aggressive the second half of the bout, utilizing his longer reach to tag Paulo with jabs and quick combinations.

Paulo, 25, landed a few more rights in the final round but was outworked by the busier Mazion.
