The Cincinnati Reds have signed Wil Myers to a one-year contract with a mutual option for the 2024 season, it was announced Thursday.
The one-year deal is for $7.5 million, a source told ESPN’s Jeff Passan, but could reach $9.5 million based on playing time or if he’s traded.
In other moves, veteran infielder Mike Moustakas was designated for assignment, while the Reds signed catcher Curt Casali to a one-year deal with a mutual option for the 2024 season.
The 32-year-old Myers would primarily be used as a right fielder, Reds general manager Nick Krall told reporters, but he has also played first base and third base in addition to the other outfield spots. He became a free agent after the San Diego Padres declined a $20 million option for the 2023 season.
Myers, who hit .261 with seven home runs and 41 RBIs in 77 games last season, was given a $1 buyout by the Padres to complete his $83 million, six-year contract.
In 10 seasons — eight with the Padres and two with Tampa Bay — Myers has a career .254 batting average with 153 home runs and 521 RBIs. He was AL Rookie of the Year in 2013 and earned his only All-Star selection in 2016.
Cincinnati went 62-100 last season. It was its first season with at least 100 losses since it went 61-101 in 1982.
In addition to right field, Myers could see some time at first while Joey Votto works his way back from rotator cuff surgery.
The 34-year-old Moustakas hit .214 with seven homers and 25 RBIs in 78 games in his last season with the Reds. The three-time All-Star signed a $64 million, four-year contract with Cincinnati in December 2019. He is a .247 hitter with 203 homers and 635 RBIs in 1,315 games.
The 34-year-old Casali also played for Cincinnati from 2018-2020. He played for San Francisco and Seattle this year, batting .203 with five homers and 17 RBIs in 57 games.
